Back by popular demand, John Aitkin, local author and tour guide! John, who’s conducted past PROBUS walks, will take us on a morning walking tour (9:30 to 11:15 a.m.) through the neighbourhood of Shaughnessy. Then we’ll gather for lunch (no-host) at The Ouisi Bistro on upper Granville Street. http://www.ouisibistro.com/
Our walk starts at 9:30 a.m. at the intersection of The Crescent and McRae Avenue, near the entrance to Shaughnessy (just east of Granville & south of 16th Avenue). Street parking is free.
We’ll meander through Shaughnessy looking at historically significant homes and learning about the personalities who built them. The neighbourhood still features a number of heritage homes designed by some of the city’s most prominent architects. Here as elsewhere in the city, though, redevelopment is a controversial issue, one that will be discussed.
Shaughnessy was planned and laid out by the Canadian Pacific Railway in 1907 as an exclusive enclave away from the industry and noise of the city. In keeping with the garden city movement, its streets follow the contours of the land instead of a rigid grid and its plantings are naturalistic. Generous lot sizes and minimum house prices ensured that not just anyone could live in the district.
This event is limited to 30 people, PROBUS Vancouver members only. The $15 fee includes the services of the tour guide and organizational expenses. If registration exceeds 30, we’ll maintain a waiting list in case of cancellations.

- Online registrations are now closed, please call the number above and determine if there is enough space for more registrations or if you can get on the wait list.
- SIGN UP at Member Services with your cheque at the April 13th PROBUS meeting and indicate whether you’ll join us for lunch.
Once registered, expect confirmation of your participation. Please note that no cancellation refund is possible after April 13th unless you arrange for someone on the wait list to replace you. If you need to speak to the event organizer, please leave a message on the Activity Line and expect a call back within 24 hours.
