The Burnaby Covanta Renewable Energy Facility, the only such site in the province, began serving the Metro Vancouver region in 1988. The facility is located in the commercial / industrial srea of South Burnaby (south of  Marine Way) and processes approximately 20% of the Lower Mainland’s garbage.

Approximately 280,000 tonnes of municipal solid waste is converted into 900,000 tonnes of steam and 25 MW of electricity.  A portion of the steam is sold to a nearby paper recycling facility, helping eliminate the use of fossil fuels.  Steam and electricity sales offset operational costs. Strict control over combustion conditions minimizes the amount of emissions.  In addition, approximately $1,000,000 worth of metals is recovered annually. This facility produces electricity with less environmental impact than almost any other source of electricity. For every tone of processed waste, one barrel of oil or one-quarter ton of coal is saved.

The tour will begin in the board room (two sequential groups of 15 individuals) where the operation of the facility is explained by a guide on a TV monitor. You will have to sign a release form. You will then be provided with a helmet, protective goggles and earplugs (the latter needed on one small part of the tour).  Good walking shoes are needed. The tour will consist of travel outside the plant and a more detailed walk through the inside of the facility. There is one set of stairs to be climbed. You will take an elevator up to the crane operator’s site where you will see the giant cranes scooping up the waste and loading it into the furnace chutes. The highlight of the tour is the operation centre where trained personnel will explain the computerized monitoring of the system.

The tour of the facility will last approximately one hour 15 minutes to one hour and a half.
